ARTIST STATEMENT

Tree is a work I created in collaboration with the artist Laurie Lambrecht during our shared 4-week residency at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center. Upon arrival, I began collecting small tree limbs and bark that fueled my drawing practice as I analyzed the elements. Establishing a connection to the woodlands surrounding the Watermill Center, we accumulated hundreds of pieces of fallen tree bark, then hand-dyed them in tones of blue. Like puzzle pieces, we assembled the bark in the form of a reimagined tree. The resulting 13 ft sculpture made from composite elements of different tree species beckoned viewers to take a closer look at worlds often overlooked.
